School tax, sales tax, the May franchise report, rendition, and the room tax each have a date of their own.

The school rate on most blocks in town.
Most census blocks inside the city sit with Huntsville ISD. A thin share sits with New Waverly ISD. The larger district's block share is about 95.68 percent. Huntsville ISD total is 0.8548. Per 100 dollars of taxable value. Maintenance and operations is 0.7098. Interest and sinking is 0.145. The workbook number describes a district. One shop's notice is a different piece of paper, and that notice is the bill.
The long range plan the city published under the name HUNTSVILLE 2040 is a civic document, not a tax rate. We can all respect a town that writes down where it thinks it is going. We still read the appraisal notice in front of us, because a plan for 2040 does not change the rate on this year's notice.
Huntsville ISD's rate on this page was taken from the Comptroller workbook of school districts. A census-block share is a map fact. Block shares never bill one shop.
Sales tax inside the city.
State sales tax is 6.25 percent. City code 2236015 is 1.5 percent. County code 4236006 is 0.5 percent. Add the state piece to the city piece and the county piece and the stack inside this city stops at 8.25 percent, because Texas caps local additions at 2 percent. Sales returns for this stack go out by the 20th.
The useful habit is to keep the tax you collected in the same month as the sale. A deposit that arrives in the next month is still last month's tax if the sale was last month. We tie that on the close so the return is not a second guess. Rates and the due day come from the Comptroller sales tax pages, read as a table rather than as a memory.
A weekend at the state park, a home game, or a quiet Monday does not move the 20th. If the return is late, the notice is the thing to answer. We will not tell you the weekend was a legal reason. We will help you see which month the tax belongs to so the next return is dull.
The franchise report in May.
Hold the May franchise report until the year under it is closed. No-tax revenue line is 2,650,000 dollars. Retail and wholesale pay 0.375 percent. Other trades are 0.75 percent. Franchise reports are due 15 May. On both the 2026 filing and the 2027 filing, revenue beneath the published line owes none of this tax, and a report can still be demanded. Open the Comptroller page for the year this entity is filing. The rate printed there is the one this report uses, including when an older May felt easier to remember.
Beneath that published line, the tax itself can be zero, and a filing can still be demanded. Spring is when owners treat beneath and optional as the same word. They are different words. Over the line, what you sell picks the rate. The Comptroller franchise pages are where we read the test. The May deadline on this article is that public test, not a rumor from a group text.
An entity that has never closed a month will struggle with that report, because the revenue number is only as good as the year under it. Which is one more reason the close has to happen before the report. A franchise report built on unmarked deposits is how a no-tax-due year becomes a letter.
Rendition in April, and the room tax.
Rendition day is usually 15 April. Walker County's appraisal district can move rendition to 15 May when the owner asks in writing. Tax Code 22.23 is the section the Comptroller deadline calendar points at. A late rendition can draw a penalty of 10 percent of the tax on that property. The appraisal district in this county says the same April day in its own words. Your list of equipment is the filing. This paragraph is only the date.
A room rented inside the city carries a local occupancy tax of 7 percent of taxable receipts, written into ordinance 74-23. The city splits that 7 percent as 3 percent for tourism, 3 percent for the visitor center, and one seventh for the arts. A payment more than 30 days late can draw a penalty of 5 percent. The room-tax clock then adds interest at 10 percent a year, and that clock starts only after 46 days past the due date have already run. Attach the state report when the city form asks for it. We do not print the street where the form is mailed. The city page is the source, and the footer phone is how you ask us to look at a specific month of rooms.
None of these dates consult the university calendar, the prison rodeo that used to fill October, or a Saturday at Lake Raven. They are public. The close is how your numbers meet them without a scramble.
How the close meets the 20th.
A busy Saturday at the cafe on the square can collect sales tax in May and drop the card deposit into June. The tax still belongs to May. We tie the return to a report of taxable sales for that month, not to whatever the bank happened to clear before the 20th. A deposit total and a taxable-sales total are allowed to disagree, and the disagreement is the work.
The same habit covers the county half percent and the city piece. Leave either one out and the 8.25 stack is short. Put the sale in the wrong month and one return is light while the next one is heavy. Owners feel that as a notice. We would rather feel it as a line on the close, while the month can still be fixed.
Rendition asks for the equipment, the vehicles, and the furniture, lined up with the asset list from those same months. Without a letter already at the appraisal district, the list is due on 15 April. That letter is the only thing that slides the list to 15 May. A late filing can draw a penalty of 10 percent of the tax on that property, which is a tax penalty and not a haircut on the value. We will read your list against the asset schedule. You send the rendition, or we prepare the figures and you send them. We do not stand in for the appraisal district.
Name the date that worries you.
School, sales tax, May, or rendition.
